Feature walls
Creating feature walls a very useful strategy for curating interiors. Artwork creates feature walls most effectively by sensitively selecting and positioning large pieces (or collages) appropriately on a wall that is clearly visible
Rules of Thumb for Creating Feature Walls with Art
-
1- Visibility
Feature walls need:
- To be big enough for large artworks
- Enough distance so as to view them within the context of the wall
- To be uncluttered and with at least two thirds empty wall space
-
2- Size of Artwork
- The artwork on a feature wall should be large, but not compete with the size of the wall
- It needs to have a natural frame around it that is created by the wall
- It should not exceed two thirds of the wall's width.
- Placing the artwork is particularly important
-
3- Composition
-The artwork can be a single piece or a collage of several pieces
- It's colours can match or contrast with the space
- If a collage, it should not be cluttered with many pieces
- Generally, the bare wall space determines suitability of a vertical or horizontal artpiece
-
4- Ideal spaces for feature walls
- A break along a passageway with enough distance from the wall
-A transitional space between spaces (e.g. between an entrance hall and stairway)
- A wall in a space with heavy traffic or where people gather (e.g. reception space, living room)
Visibility and Size
-
Big enough for large artwork
The feature wall should be large enough for a large artwork (e.g. Mountainscape)- Select Mountainscape - (USA and Europe)
-
Distance
A feature wall is best with distance to view the artwork (Precinct) and wall in context- Select Precinct- (USA and Europe)
-
Uncluttered
The less uncluttered the wall, the more impact the artwork (Urban-wide)- Select Urban-Wide (Australia)
Composition
-
Collage
Collages (from "Urban-square" group) can form feature walls but should not clutter the wall- Try Urban-Square (Australia)
-
Matching composition
You can match your artwork colour or tone with the space to create your feature wall.
-
Contrasting composition
You can also contrast your colours with the immediate context, for a composition to create a feature wall

-
A nook
A wall in a space that acts as a break along a passageway often used (such as a nook) can be a great place for a feature wall.
-
A transition space
A transition space between interiors (e.g. between an entrance lobby and other spaces)
